A lot has been made of the fact the Buccaneers made a visit to Norman, Oklahoma to see running Joe Mixon and later met in private with the former Sooners standout at One Buc Place.
Don’t be surprised if it turns out that the player the Bucs were really looking at in Norman and even tried to get some more information on from Mixon was his Sooners teammate, Samaje Perine.
Perine, a powerful insider runner who has drawn comparisons to Michael Turner, was a guest on “PFT Live” on NBC Sports Network today and he said no team has shown more interest in him during this pre-draft phase than the Bucs.
“I would have to say Tampa Bay just because they came down to Norman to work me out and they flew men out to tour their facility and to talk with all their coaches,’’ Perine said. “Other than them (the interest shown by other teams) has been pretty equal.’’
Now, we here at Florida Football Insiders believe too much is often made of the visits teams make to prospects pro days and even the visits the prospects make to tour team’s facilities.
That’s all part of a team doing its due diligence, but there is little doubt the Bucs want to add some running back depth and Perine is one of the backs who’s been flying under the radar a bit.
He was hurt (shoulder, hamstring) for a while last year so he missed some time and he’s not quite in Mixon’s class but many believe he could prove to be a mid-round steal.
If the Bucs also see Perine as a Michael Turner type he could be someone they target. After all, Turner was a big part of the first Falcons team that Bucs coach Dirk Koetter worked with as the Falcons offensive coordinator.
Either way, he’s a player Bucs fans may want to keep an eye on as the draft draws near and into Day 2 of the draft if the Bucs don’t grab a running back in round one.
