Florida State received some good news with the announcement by running back Jacques Patrick that he will return for his senior season.

“I have decided not to put my name in this year’s NFL Draft and will remain at Florida State for my senior season!” Patrick announced from his Twitter account on Wednesday night. “I’m excited to get back to work with my teammates and our new coaching staff to prepare for a great 2018 season. See you in Doak on September 3rd!!”

Patrick had had 134 carries for 780 yards with seven touchdowns in 11 games this season. He also came back late in the year  after undergoing a minor knee procedure that had been originally thought to be a season-ending injury.

Patrick will be one of the senior leaders for first-year coach Willie Taggart and his mostly new staff.

Six other FSU players have already declared for the 2018 NFL draft. Safety Derwin James, defensive end Josh Sweat, cornerback Tarvarus McFadden, wide receiver Auden Tate, tight end Ryan Izzo and defensive lineman Jalen Wilkerson.

Back to Patrick, he will share backfield duties this season with freshman star Cam Akers, who broke the school’s freshman rushing record with 1,024 yards on 194 carries in 13 games this season.

With a lot of talented backs coming out into the 2018 draft like Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, a handful of SEC backs, and possibly, Stanford’s Bryce Love, Patrick did the right thing by returning. He’s a solid, but not spectacular running back and could improve his draft stock, when he comes out next season.

It should be a thinner class at running back in 2019.
