The much debated and maligned FSU defense of 2016 was missing it’s star and as much as he wanted to be cleared by team doctors and trainers to play late in the year, Derwin James was never given the “go ahead.”

Well, fast forward some seven months later, James’ surgically repaired knee is dramatically better and the leader is back on the field, albeit, Spring practice.

Here’s more from’s Andy Staples, who was at the Noles practices and evaluating James’ return:

Of particular interest in the article, is James’ comments on how valuable watching has helped him in terms of his preparation, understanding the other team’s plan and then, adjustments, etc.

It’s also refreshing that head coach Jimbo Fisher impressed upon James and his family, etc., how important the surgery to sew the cartilage together for healing rather than remove it would have long term career benefit, even though it meant not having him the rest of 2016.

Nole fans should also be excited that he is back returning kicks, where was explosive previously, during these April workouts.

Bottom line, when fully healthy, James is one of the top safeties in all of college football and he is close, if not all the way back, to being that.
