The Florida State Seminoles will kick off one more time this season, as they take on Southern Mississippi in the Independence bowl. It’s been a crazy past few weeks, since they were last on the field against UL-Monroe. Here’s what to watch:
Fsu offense Vs. So Miss defense-
The Noles offense has been up and down all season long. One minute they are hitting big plays, the next they are running down teams’ throats. Then out of nowhere, the drive stalls at the goal line.
Southern Miss brings the number 17th ranked total defense and were able to stifle the run game of a power-five team once this season in Tennessee.
Fsu Defense vs. So Miss offense-
The Storyline is already set with FSU missing Safety Derwin James who is choosing to sit out to not risk injury for the NFL Draft, defensive end Josh Sweat and linebacker Matthew Thomas. With some big names out other top athletes will get a chance to make names for themselves going into next season.
They will be tasked with stopping Southern Miss. running back Ito Smith, who ran for 1,321 yards and 13 TDs and quarterback Kwadra Griggs. With the way FSU’s defense has played on and off all year, the Golden Eagles could be flying vs. the Noles.
Both teams will be playing with some added motivation. Yes, even the Noles.
The Seminoles will be playing a game no one saw coming back in August, but here we are. The Noles can gain some momentum into next season and quiet down some of the negative talk about the teams.
They also will be playing their last games of either their college careers or some of their coaches due to the addition of new coach Willie Taggart and his assistants.
Southern Miss will be playing to knock off a traditional “Blue-blood” of college football.
The Golden Eagles have a real chance to win this game, and they know it. And, will look to play complete four quarters of football to back it up.
Matchups to watch-
WR Auden Tate has an excellent chance to be taken in the first three rounds in the upcoming NFL draft watch for him to exploit some one on one matchups.
RB Jaques Patrick could potentially head to the draft as well if he punishes the Golden Eagles watch for him to possibly declare.
RB Ito Smith a lesser known draft prospect can change that, if he can have his way with a Noles defense with plenty of great players despite missing stars.
WR Korey Robertson has been a big play target for the Eagles and will look to create some big plays vs. a talented but also, at times an under performing FSU secondary.
