Say this for Florida State safety Derwin James, he doesn’t lack for confidence at this stage of the draft evaluation process. On Thursday night, he was a guest on the NFL Network’s “Total Access” show and made it clear, where he believes he belongs when the draft gets underway on April 26th.

James answered honestly and confidently, when he was asked not only about his status among fellow defensive backs, but defenders as a whole. Then, he was asked about what he wants teams to know about him that they should weigh in drafting him: “Knowing what type of guy I am….on and off the football field. Knowing that I’m a leader and how passionate I am for this game. That I can do a lot of things.”

As we wrote on Wednesday, James was in Tampa talking to the Bucs who hold the #7 overall pick on an official visit at their facility. He obviously has a big ally already on the roster in former FSU icon QB Jameis Winston. However, the Bucs would seemingly have other glaring needs that early in the draft besides safety.

As Rhett Lewis of “Total Access” pointed out, James was doing the interview while in the Green Bay Packers facility on Thursday. Green Bay currently holds the 14th overall pick upcoming in the draft. And he would fit a need for them in what has become a depleted Pack secondary over the last couple of years. However, will he last that long in the opening round?

Also, it was learned on Thursday that James is one of 22 players that the NFL officially invited to attend the draft at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX. He is one of four defensive backs invited, and boldly believes that he will be the first one taken over the likes of Minkah Fitzpatrick of Alabama and Denzel Ward of Ohio State.
