It’s official, for the debut of the Willie Taggart era in primetime on Labor Day night, FSU will not go traditional Garnet jerseys and Gold pants. Instead?

The Seminoles will be “Back in Black,” as in all black, including a black color scheme helmet.

Taggart made the announcement at his Wednesday morning news conference that his “players council” made up of representatives from each grade class, along with the football staff, had decided to go with the all black in the opener.

Here’s a look from the official Florida State football Twitter handle:

There is definitely Garnet and a little bit of Gold in the scheme, but the black-on-black is an interesting choice for the ACC opener with Virginia Tech.

It will be the fifth time that Florida State has gone with the all black color scheme, but the first since 2015.

Here’s a closer look at the helmet color scheme that FSU will be in for this game:

There is no doubt that the new generation of players thrives off of wild looking color schemes of uniforms and patterns. And even hallowed Notre Dame has gone to the alternate jerseys and helmets in recent years under Brian Kelly seeking to appeal to recruits and of course cashing big merchandise checks, too. This includes the alternate pinstripe jersey they will wear during a game at Yankee Stadium later this year:

Taggart saw all this uniform fashion craziness up close and personal in his one-year stop with the Oregon Ducks. They would frequently look like a neon green and yellow cartoon show for games every week.

Now, for the traditionalists it’s certainly going to be an insult and an eyesore to see the Noles black on black on national TV Monday night.

However, if FSU comes out strong and wins the game, then there will be superstitious people who say keep bringing the black back.

For the record, the Noles are 2-2 all time in the all black color scheme.
