Rule #1 about “pro day” workouts is that you cannot read more into it than other parts of the “process” of evaluating players. That being said, when you are at a speed/skill position like running back for the upcoming NFL Draft, everyone is concerned about how fast and explosive you are.

And when you are projected first round pick (if not top 10) running back like FSU’s Dalvin Cook, you’re time in the 40 carries a little bit more significance.

Cook chose to run the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine last month in Indianapolis in a move that surprised some. Most RB’s and WR’s choose to only run at their individual pro day. We wrote about his complete workout here.

Now, while his 40 time did not blow anyone away, if you watched FSU play at all the last three seasons and saw Cook, in helmet and full pads, zoom past defenders on one long run after another, you were “wowed.”

Nevertheless, Cook and his management people apparently felt it was a necessary part of his draft resume’ that he run, again this morning in Tallahassee.

Cook ended up running the 40 yard dash twice and here is one of those:

Numerous observers who were on hand for today’s workout relayed that Cook ran sub 4.40 on the handheld stopwatches, but Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Network cited an NFL scouting source as saying Cook ran 4.51/4.52 while also displaying excellent hands, route-running skills and burst.

So, the bottom line here is Cook showed confidence in himself and performed well. Scouts are going to like that, so Cook’s pro-day workout will likely go down as just another reason why teams are going to be salivating, especially early on, to have a chance to draft him.
