The Miami Hurricanes held their first scrimmage of Fall camp on Saturday. It was supposed to be a day where we got a chance to look at the QB battle, which is the hottest topic with regards to Miami football at the moment. The four players Malik Rosier, Evan Shirreffs, N’kosi Perry and Cade Weldon all played in the scrimmage. The highly touted Perry certainly struggled in his live action debut on Saturday and we will get to that in a moment, but let’s take a look at the other guys.

First off the scrimmage didn’t have live contact for the QBs, which certainly will play a role in the final decision making. Malik Rosier was pretty solid out there throwing 8-14 181 yards and three TDs. According to head coach Mark Richt, despite Rosier’s solid numbers, much of his success was more situational as opposed to the QB making a big play. Shirreffs went 10-14 132 yards and a TD. Which isn’t bad, however he wasn’t really highlighted by Richt when asked about the QB situation.

Now back to Perry who certainly struggled. He went 6-15 for 68 yards and an INT. The interceptions is what concerns Richt the most as he has been adamant about his QBs protecting the football.

Weldon struggled even more going 2-10 for 40 yards and an INT. So it was a rough day for the freshman QBs on Saturday.

For right now Malik Rosier is the front runner, however there are two more scrimmages left. Richt and his staff are going to have to likely allow tackling QBs at some point to see which one will be able to handle more real game like scenarios.

Not a great start at all for Perry, but this competition is going to go down to the wire. Perry will be given several other chances to prove his skills and make Saturday’s scrimmage an afterthought. It’s likely his competition to win, however Malik Rosier and Shirreffs are clearly not working their hardest to win this job.

On another note RB Mark Walton left the scrimmage due to a bruised hip. Luckily the injury doesn’t seem to be serious, but it was still a scare for a team that doesn’t have much experience at RB outside of Walton.
