NFL announces attendees for upcoming draft in Philadelphia

When the NFL put out the list of 22 players who have been officially invited to the 2017 live draft proceedings in Philadelphia, we were not only struck by who was on it, but also, who was not.

First on the “who’s coming?” list, the league made it official Thursday evening:

Interesting, that with the quarterback class taking knocks from everywhere that none of them are worthy of being taken in the first round, Deshaun Watson, Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer are all invited to attend. It makes you wonder if they won’t sit for five hours on the opening night for the opening round and not have their names called.

Then, again, one, two or three of them might go night one. That’s the draft for you.

Next, the running back class is loaded, but of the three prominent backs expected to go as high as in the top 20, only LSU’s Leonard Fournette was invited. That means that Christian McCaffery of Stanford and Florida State’s Dalvin Cook will likely see their name come up night one with friends and family at a place of their choosing.

It’s interesting that speed receiver John Ross, who we wrote earlier this week might be a great fit for the Bucs, got an invite to Philly. Meanwhile, Michigan defensive end Taco Charlton, who has visited the Dolphins and the Buccaneers recently, is not invited and will be watching on the tube like the rest of us.

It’s also curious that presumptive #1 pick, Myles Garret defensive end out of Texas A & M, is also not on the list of invites. That would mean that he and his representatives have told the NFL they are not coming to the Draft despite the really good chance his name will be the first called.

That’s not unprecedented, as Bucs QB Jameis Winston watched the draft from his family’s home in Alabama two years ago, when Tampa Bay took him #1.

Jared Goff, the top pick of the Rams last year, was in attendance in Chicago for the draft.

Clearly, the league wants star power there, but again, not everyone got the call/envelope Thursday.
