There have been a lot of coaching “comings and goings” over the past couple of weeks in the NFL and we at F.F.I. are doing our best to keep track of it all. So, here goes your current update:

Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith had been known to have interviewed in Jacksonville and San Diego for their head coaching jobs. The Jags went ahead and promoted Doug Marrone to full time coach. Then, as Roy Cummings wrote Friday, as it appeared that he wasn’t going to get the Chargers job, Smith got a raise and extension from Tampa Bay that includes him saying he’s committed to being with the Buccaneers beyond 2017.

Next, the Dolphins saw defensive coordinator Vance Joseph leave early last week to become the new head coach of the Denver Broncos. After some speculation that Adam Gase and Fins management might go outside the building for a replacement, they decided this weekend to stay in house and promote linebackers coach Matt Burke.

Meanwhile, back to the Jaguars, we wrote about the mess already underway with Marrone trying to hire his staff, but new VP (boss) Tom Coughlin imposing his will on those efforts.

Well, that hiring process is advancing, including the Jags finding a prominent name this past weekend to become running backs coach. Although, Jacksonville hasn’t made it official, Alex Marvez of Sporting News had the scoop Saturday:

Wheatley, is a former All-American RB himself at Michigan, but also as important, was with Marrone at Syracuse and the Buffalo Bills, as well.

Then Monday afternoon, the” juiciest tidbit of them all” leaked outta the Jacksonville complex:

We don’t begin to understand why Kelly would agree to come east to become an underling to Marrone and give up probably a good chunk of what the 49ers would owe him for it. Perhaps, it’s just Coughlin making Marrone be thorough like was explained last week? Perhaps, he is genuinely interested in being just a play caller for a while again?

But, this situation seems to make zero sense for that.

In any event, we will continue to monitor it all.
