With the Monday news that the Panthers have already agreed to a rookie contract with first round pick Christian McCaffery, it solidifies what Leonard Fournette can expect in terms of guarantees and signing bonus.
— Around The NFL (@AroundTheNFL) May 5, 2017
McCaffery, the eighth pick last month in the NFL Draft, signed his four year deal for just over $17 million with $10.7 million for a signing bonus.
Fournette, taken by Jacksonville four picks earlier, now knows the low end of what he can expect. His deal this year will be comparable to Ezekiel Elliott’s deal with Dallas in 2016, who was also the fourth overall pick. Elliott signed for just over $24 million and over $16 million in signing bonus a year ago and ran away, literally, with the NFL rushing title and rookie of the year.
Fournette will probably make the same or a little better and it will all be fully guaranteed.
As we wrote earlier Monday, he’s part of a Jags rookie crop that should energize the offense and give Jacksonville a chance to leap into playoff relevancy. Fournette, the new million dollar man, will be a big part of that.
