He’s the top high school defensive back in the Florida. In fact, some have him rated, as the #1 defensive back headed to college football this season. And, on Wednesday, Patrick Surtain Jr. the son of the former Dolphins great, made it official and chose Alabama to play his college football this season.
In doing so Surtain Jr. spurned the local team, the Hurricanes, as well as LSU, who felt they had a legitimate shot to land him.
We had written previously that Alabama was hot recently for Surtain Jr. and coach Nick Saban talked to Sr., who is the head coach at American Heritage High School, about the defensive back job in Tuscaloosa to deliver his son to the school.
Surtain Sr. has led American Heritage to back to back 5A Florida State Championships.
Just before Surtain, Jr. announced, Tyson Campbell, his teammate and the #2 ranked DB prospect still left on high school, chose the University of Georgia and continued the roll of coach Kirby Smart in recruiting. The Bulldogs 2018 class is now considered #1 in the country with four of the top 15 players in the ESPN top 300 in the nation headed there.
So, both DBs at American Heritage elect not to stay in the state and head to the SEC.
