According to InsidetheU, the Miami Hurricanes have decided on their new defensive line coach. Mark Richt added Jess Simpson who was a defensive assistant on the Atlanta Falcons.

Simpson has been around the block coaching wise, especially around the prep school circuit, which is great for recruiting. But he clearly has some development chops if he was able to leverage his experience to an NFL gig.

He started with Pat Dye at Auburn and a student assistant, as well as Terry Bowden. After being an assistant at Buford high he served as head coach for the school for 12 years where he won seven state titles, which is pretty impressive.

Obviously Simpson is going to have his work cut out for him filling in for Craig Kuligowski, who left for Alabama last week.  Kuligowski is considered one of the best if not the best defensive line coaches in all of college football. Miami doesn’t have the football budget that Bama has and Saban with his seemingly endless riches swooped him up.

Anyways, Simpson seems like a solid hire since he probably has a solid pipeline to Georgia which should help recruiting. He also will have some talent coming back. Gerald Willis, who took off 2017 is expected to be back in full form. Willis along with sophomore Jon Ford are supposed to anchor the defensive line with Jonathan Garvin and Demtrius Jackson on the ends. Can’t forget Joe Jackson, who has as much talent as anyone in the country on the defensive line.

Basically Simpson isn’t coming into a situation with a blank slate. He’s has quite a bit of talent and some experience to go with it. Not to mention coaching from Kuligowski who surely knows how to develop the players. Now the reigns move over to Simpson who will have to pick up with his predecessor left off. An ACC Championship and a place at the CFB Playoff is on the line.
