Rapid Recap- Clemson blows out Miami to capture ACC Title

Miami Hurricane fans were hoping last Friday’s upset loss to Pitt to stop their 10-0 season wasn’t an omen for the ACC Championship Game. Unfortunately, it was, and then some. As the Clemson Tigers spent four quarters spanking the Canes, and had a decisive 38-3 win to capture the ACC Championship for the third straight season.

The Tigers, who had already been ranked #1 by the College Football Playoff Committee on Tuesday night, raced out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and were never threatened in this one.

Tigers QB Kelly Bryant (above) ran a score in from 11 yards out to make it 14-0. Then, with Miami floundering in the third quarter, he later threw a 27 yard TD pass to Deon Cain to make it 38-0.

Part of that floundering was Miami QB Malik Rosier throwing two costly interceptions that allowed Clemson to bust the game wide open. The freshman signal caller was unable to shake his poor performance against Pitt, and Miami had not shot to come back once they got down.

Miami kicked a meaningless field goal in the final four minutes to avoid being shut out.

For his part, Bryant completed his first nine passes and the Tigers were also a perfect 7 for 7 on third down conversions in the first half to help them take the three TD lead.

Clemson will obviously remain #1, when the CFP Final rankings are revealed Sunday afternoon and they will play in the Sugar Bowl semi-final on New Year’s Night. That will be against whomever the committee votes as number #4 to set the match-up.

It’s the third straight year in the playoff semis for Dabo Swinney’s team, after having destroyed Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl last year and beating Oklahoma decisively two years ago in the Orange Bowl. The Tigers may get to meet one or both of those teams in the 2018 upcoming playoff, too.

Meanwhile, with Miami struggling late in the year to finish 10-2, they will await the ACC bowl tie-in situation on Sunday and see where they end up.
