The Miami Hurricanes are officially in the top 10 in the AP and Coaches polls. You just read that sentence and it’s accurate. When was the last time The U was in the top 10? 2013 is the answer when they were ranked #7. In 2009, they reached #8. What used to be a common place for the Canes has recently been an aberration. Miami came into the season unranked, so their rise to the top 10 is a testament to the beginning of the Mark Richt era. The win over Georgia Tech on Saturday was an important stepping stone for Miami. However the prime time showdown with their rival Florida State will be Richt’s biggest test to date.

The Noles are coming off a heartbreaking loss at home to North Carolina. They now have 2 ACC losses, which is rare for them this early in the season. To say FSU is reeling would be an understatement. They head into a huge showdown against rival Miami extremely motivated. Don’t expect the see the same Noles that we saw in losses to Louisville and UNC. With that said, it’s hard to ignore how FSU’s defense has swiss cheese holes in it. They are giving up a ton of yards, a lot of points and big time plays. Miami has some big time play ability on offense, so it’s possible we can see more exploitation of the weaknesses of the FSU defense.

Even with two losses, FSU is still a top 25 team according to both poles. This is a rivalry game, so polls, and current play can often be thrown out of the window. We know Miami is motivated to take the next step on the national stage. A win at home against FSU would do just that. A Canes squad going into the meat of their schedule standing at 5-0 and ranked in the Top 10 is a really good look. Now they just have to close the deal. Kickoff is 8pm ET.
