Interesting news coming out of South Florida. Former Miami Hurricane QB, who has for the last several years been serving as an assistant coach in the NFL has been hired as an assistant athletic direction with Florida International according to the athletics website.
If you recall Dorsey was recruiting and played for current FIU head coach Butch Davis. Obviously this marriage makes a lot of sense. Here’s what Butch Davis had to say about the hire via the FIU athletics website.
“I am super excited that Ken Dorsey is going to be a part of our athletic department,” FIU head football coach Butch Davis said. “He brings class, integrity and great knowledge of what it’s like being around championship programs. He’s well respected throughout the NFL. He’ll be a great addition to our athletic department.”
Dorsey was a big time record setter when he played at Miami. For the past five seasons he has been with the Carolina Panthers as the QB coach for the team. Here’s was Panthers QB Cam Newton had to say about Dorsey.
“I think extremely highly of Ken Dorsey,’ Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said. “He is an extremely hard and efficient worker. My challenge was also to beat him to work. He made my life as easy as possible. He’ll bring a newness and spark to FIU. Not only is he a hard worker, but he has a vibrant killer instinct. He’s a known proven winner over the years. I credit a lot of my success to Ken Dorsey.”
Quite a bit of an endorsement coming from one of the elite QBs in the NFL. It will certainly be interesting to see what his specific role will be with the program and how much influence he can end up having with the football program.
Either way this is quite an interesting hire. You don’t often see folks who are in the coaching circuit stepping aside for administration duties, especially those who had a high profile job. Now Dorsey is back in South Florida laying low with his old college coach.
