The Miami Hurricanes Move Up to 7th in New CFB Playoff Rankings

(USA Today - Matthew Emmons)

After dominating 13th ranked Virginia Tech on Saturday, the Miami Hurricanes have moved up to #7 in the latest CFB rankings, up three sports from 10th. Below are the new rankings:

  1. Georgia
  2. Alabama
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Clemson
  5. Oklahoma
  6. TCU
  7. Miami
  8. Wisconsin
  9. Washington
  10. Auburn

This week there are four one loss teams in front of Miami. With that said, Miami controls their own destiny to make the college football playoff. They take on #3 Notre Dame on Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium. A win there will likely get them into the top 4. Then if they keep winning, they likely play Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. Obviously if they win that, they will be in the playoff.

The rankings for Miami at this point isn’t a big deal. Again it ought to serve as motivation as it did last week against Virginia Tech, when the players admitted that they felt they weren’t getting the respect. Even after dominating the Hokies and holding onto the nation’s longest win streak it seems they can make the argument that they aren’t getting the full respect they deserve. Either way for them, their schedule puts them in perhaps the best position to make the playoff if they win out.

Wisconsin on the other hand is a longer shot. Despite being undefeated, they will have to rely on remaining that way and winning the Big Ten Championship game. Since both Penn State and Ohio State lost the Big Ten has been weakened. For Canes fans they shouldn’t worry too much, they are in a much better spot than the Badgers at this point.
