Despite their 2nd half meltdown defensively, which saw Houston erase a 24-3 deficit to win 31-24 Saturday, UCF does get some Monday love from the American Athletic Conference.

Defensive Back Shaquem Griffin earns the Knights their first weekly defensive award of the year:

Griffin was obviously everywhere, especially in the first half, as the Knights picked Houston QB Greg Ward, Jr. three times. What makes the story more notable and heart warming is that Griffin was born with a deformed left hand, and yet is playing and succeeding in major college football.

Also, in a neat moment post game Saturday in Houston Griffin took time out to seek out courageous Cougars Cheerleader Julianna Linton who cheers with a new “bionic” prosthetic arm. Read more about that from Shannon Green of the Orlando Sentinel here:

Even though the scoreboard didn’t work out, Griffin’s performance, his perseverance and gestures like that were big winners Saturday on and off the field.
