Of the three NFL teams in our state, the easiest one to Peg on have to have earlier in your fantasy draft is the top back in Jacksonville. Leonard Fournette.
Fournette burst upon the scene a year ago as a rookie out of LSU and those fantasy draft owners that were willing to take the risk on him within the first couple of rounds were greatly rewarded.
Fournette rushed for just over 1,000 yards in 13 games with 10 total touchdowns in his rookie campaign. Plus, he eclipsed the 100 yard rushing game mark five times, too.
And as we have already written it is a leaner and meaner Fournette having dropped 15 pounds and sculpting his body more this offseason. And, he believes he has a quicker burst and more endurance upcoming for 2018. That’s bad news for would be tacklers.
It’s rather obvious for our premise of “have to have” fantasy players that you’re not going to take Blake Bortles or any of the Jaguars receivers early in a draft. It’s clear that in Nathaniel Hackett’s offense, Fournette will be featured and deservedly so.
Another positive is he showed explosive big-play capability early on last season with a 90 yard touchdown run to clinch the Pittsburgh win and later a 75-yard touchdown run to open the game with the Rams.
Yes, defenses will load up with eight and, maybe even a ninth guy, near the line of scrimmage a lot this season to try to take Fournette away, as much as possible.
Then, the Jaguars will be reliant on Bortles making throws down the field to loosen up that defense.
One more interesting aspect is the money they spent this offseason on free agent guard Andrew Norwell. He is a “road-grader” blocker and now being paired next to massive left tackle cam Robinson expect the Jaguars to have success running left.
Depending on the size of your league, you better be ready to take Fournette in the first round, because it’s not likely that he will last beyond the middle of the second round of any draft that has at least eight teams in it.
Fournette is that valuable for fantasy purposes and Jaguar fans know he’s that valuable in real football to their hopes for 2018, as well.
