Price of success? Jaguars may lose DB Aaron Colvin

The Jacksonville Jaguars are learning what it’s like to be a great team in the NFL. While its great to win games and improve as a team, that often comes with a price.

In season of surprising or unexpected success, it often leads to paydays for those previously underpaid or undervalued players. And sometimes that payday is elsewhere.

In this case, were talking about Jags nickel corner, Aaron Colvin.

The Jaguars will almost certainly keep receiver receiver Allen Robinson, whether they sign him long term or franchise tag him by March 6.

There just doesn’t appear to be enough room for the former 4th round pick out of Oklahoma, Colvin, to also get top dollars. And, in a passing league, corners are a hot commodity, especially young ones on the open market.

Colvin could end up being paid more like an outside corner in the market, as teams may look to outbid another to land the guy they want. He made 44 tackles and five pass breakups last season in playing 67.6 percent of the defensive snaps, and 23.92 percent of the special team’s snaps.

With Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye, the loss of Colvin will sting a little less in North Florida.

The Jags can fill the void in the second or third wave of free agency, a mid-late round draft pick, or possibly a guy on the roster now.

Ramsey though, doesn’t want to see him leave either, tweeting out Tuesday that the Jags need to keep both Colvin and Robinson in Jacksonville.

Colvin could be the first of several players in the coming years to leave Jacksonville for a more significant payday and role.

Though it hurts the Jags to lose key players, it also means the front office is doing a great job of drafting and signing players, which usually results in wins, but that others want.

Guys like Aaron Colvin.
