There is no disputing that it’s a “different day” in Jacksonville, since owner Shad Khan reached back to the past and brought back Tom Coughlin as Executive Vice President. Now, the way that the Jags are attempting to evaluate the roster and re-mold the team are being called into question.
Jaguars beat writer Ryan O’Halloran had the skinny earlier Friday afternoon, explaining that the potential violation stems from a letter sent by Coughlin to several players asking that they return to Jacksonville for physical examinations before the team’s official April 10 reporting date for offseason workouts.

Now, this doesn’t rise to the level of some of the other recent violations by franchises who were either having too much contact in off season workouts, where it was supposed to be minimal or like last off-season where the Seahawks were essentially holding an outright practice with contact in June that is expressly forbidden.
In that instance, the NFL has penalized Seattle their fifth round pick in the upcoming draft, fined the team $400,000 and coach Pete Carroll $200,000. They also lost three of their “Organized Team Activities” or OTA’s for this off season, as well. It was their third such violation of the policies during Carroll’s tenure.
But as O’Halloran points out, this is the second time that the player’s association has had to look into an issue with the Jaguars since Coughlin was hired in January. The previous grievance is the result of former Jags defensive end Jared Odrick filing a $5.5 grievance, saying he is owed the money because it was guaranteed against injury.
O’Halloran cites a union source as saying that, when it’s all said and done, the likely penalty for the letter violation will probably be nothing more than a lost OTA, but the long-term effect will likely be that the Jags will now be on the NFL and NFLPA’s radar for other possible impermissible violations down the road.
