Well, if there was hope that the controversy over protests of the National Anthem, including President Donald Trump’s daily tweeting, was going to die down soon, Jaguars owner Shad Khan just added to it.
At the conclusion of Wednesday’s NFL owner’s meeting in New York, Khan spoke to Jarrett Bell of USA Today on the subjects surrounding the controversy, the President’s recent comments on social media and more.
And, he did not hold back.
“This is a very personal issue with him,” Khan told USA Today and went on to say, “….maybe a great goal he had in life to own an NFL team is not very likely. So make it tougher, or to hurt the league, it’s very calculated.”
Trump, who has repeatedly criticized kneeling players and urged NFL owners to “fire” them, was one of the unsuccessful bidders trying to buy the Buffalo Bills in 2014.
Khan, who is a Pakistan immigrant, then went even further criticizing the Commander in Chief, “The attacks on Muslims, the attacks on minorities, the attacks on Jews. I think the NFL doesn’t even come close to that on the level of being offensive.” He continued, “here, it’s about money or messing with- trying to soil a league or a brand that he’s jealous of.”
It should be noted that Khan actually donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund
Talk about irony.
When Bell asked the Jaguars owner whether he regretted having done that, he said “I have no regrets in life. This ugly, toxic side sours the whole experience.”
Khan’s comments Wednesday come on the heels of controversy in his own market over the anthem protests. As we wrote earlier on Wednesday, there is no disputing that there is backlash in Jacksonville from fans in general and the military in specific, over the controversy.
However, he’s clearly taking it “next level” by being the first owner to take Trump on in the media extensively over the that issue and the others.
Now, we wait to see if the President, who almost can’t help himself on Twitter, will respond to Khan in specific or the NFL owners in general.
As of 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night, he had not.
