And then, there were none.
The Jaguars became the latest NFL team, and third in Florida, to switch their kicker this season by releasing veteran Jason Myers Tuesday, and replacing him with a young kicker, but who has NFL experience in Josh Lambo.
First on Myers, he missed two more field goals in Sunday’s loss to the Rams. Both of those were from 54 yards out and by no means automatic. Myers had also missed a 52 yarder in the overtime loss to the Jets making him 0 for 3 beyond 50 yards this season. He was 11 for 15 on field goals overall, but had also missed two extra points.
But, Myers had an erratic preseason, as well, including two games where he missed two field goals.
As for Lambo, after going undrafted, he’s the former kicker for the Chargers in 2015-16 seasons having made 52 of 64 field goals, but also missing eight extra points.
Lambo was beaten out in L.A. this preseason by Younghoe Koo. Koo has since been released himself by the Chargers.
Got all that?
Well, here’s more.
Myers release means the Jaguars join the Buccaneers, who released incumbent Roberto Aguayo in preseason and the Dolphins who did the same to incumbent Andrew Franks on the eve the season.
The Bucs replaced Aguayo with veteran Nick Folk, who struggled in back to back games with the Giants and Patriots and was released last week. Lambo was actually one of the kickers who Tampa Bay looked at before signing veteran Patrick Murray, who made his only extra point attempt Sunday in Arizona.
As for the Dolphins, they went with former Browns kicker Cody Parkey, who promptly won the Chargers game week one in final the minute with a field goal. He also kicked the go ahead field goal in the fourth quarter in Sunday’s 20-17 win at Atlanta.
Lambo is also the former kicker at Texas A & M in college, where he was part of the team with Heisman winning QB Johnny Manziel and current Buccaneers standout WR Mike Evans.
