The Jaguars had everyone present and accounted for in day one of their mandatory mini-camp at TIAA Bank Field. And that included star defensive back Jalen Ramsey, who had chosen not to work out over the past few weeks in voluntary team OTAs.
Ramsey instead has chosen to work out with his father and their athletic training business and facility in Tennessee.
On Tuesday after the workout, Ramsey downplayed to the media the significance of having not been at OTA’s or even the previous two off season mandatory mini-camps. He actually missed both of those due to injury.
Jaguars reporter Jon Reid of the Florida Times-Union videoed part of Ramsey’s presser:

“In the previous two years, I hadn’t made it this far (to mini camp healthy),” Ramsey said. “Rookie year (2016) I didn’t make it to mini camp ’cause I had knee surgery. Last year I didn’t make the mandatory mini-camp because I had sports hernia….I’m ahead of schedule right now.”
Even though he ended up being an All-Pro selection last season as the Jaguars exploded from the doldrums, won the AFC South and two playoff games, Ramsey said Tuesday that it was a physical and mental challenge, throughout those first two seasons, too.
“I’m always going to work hard, but felt like I was behind schedule….I felt like had to work that much harder. I didn’t feel like I got ‘in the swing of things’ until during the season, instead of….hit the ground running.”
Ramsey’s breakout 2017 included four INTs, 17 passes defended and 63 combined tackles, as part of one of the best secondaries in the NFL.
And the bottom line for the organization is he is healthy and was present for the biggest off season week of the summer before training camp. So, ultimately, he is doing what he needed to do to be ready in Todd Wash’s defense starting Tuesday.
