At the Friday conclusion of OTAs, Jaguars coach Doug Marrone made the next “move” in the back and forth over whether newly acquired veteran left tackle Branden Albert will be at mandatory mini-camp next week.

“He told me he’d be here,” Marrone said Friday afternoon. “I take him at his word. We’ll see.”

Albert, who was acquired from the Dolphins in a trade in March, is apparently less than thrilled that Miami did not outright release him at that time. That would have given him the chance to pick his own team/situation as a free agent.

Instead, he’s with the Jags, who have been one of the worst franchises in football the last five years or more. And, he’s not been part of the “voluntary” OTAs the last few weeks. It’s also not clear when Albert last spoke to Marrone about his intentions.

When asked what kind of shape Marrone thought Albert was in, he was guarded. “I don’t know…..the first thing is he has to pass the physical…’s a process we go through.” Marrone then continued, “We are going to meet this weekend. Then, on Monday. We will discuss it all (meaning if Albert is there and if he’s not)”

It’s also obvious that the Jags have long range plans involving second round pick Cam Robinson, who has been playing left tackle during the OTAs and would be the candidate to replace Albert if he continues to stay away. Next week is the last time the team will put full pads on before training camp in late July.

Albert, who is slated to make just under $9 million this season in his current deal, is facing daily fines for missing the mini-camp practices, because again, they are mandatory for all players under contract.

The team can fine him for every day he’s not in attendance. Here’s more on that:

It’s also well known, that teams will waive such fines at later dates, if everyone is eventually worked out between player and team. So, that is a variable that is unknown.

Also unknown to everyone, but Albert and his advisors, is if he actually is there for the last important work before training camp begins. We find out that answer next week.
