JACKSONVILLE – It’s a new season, but more importantly there is a whole new regime in Jacksonville, and that became quite evident this weekend when the Jaguars welcomed their rookie draft picks, their undrafted free agents and a whole host of tryout hopefuls in for the team’s rookie minicamp.
The Tom Coughlin “keep it close to the vest” approach was in full effect as no fans and no outside media (only team media) are being allowed to watch even a portion of the Jags workouts, though the Jags did offer a few brief glimpses of what went on via their own state media outlet.
For example, here is real live proof that the fourth overall pick in the draft, Leonard Fournette, was out there on Friday getting on-field reps without pads and at about half speed:

For the record (even though you cannot tell in that photo) Fournette will wear #27 during his rookie season. That’s because the NFL doesn’t allow running backs to wear single digit numbers. So, the LSU star’s #7 isn’t an option.
Alabama tackle Cam Robinson and Oklahoma wideout DeDe Westbrook were also on the field Friday. Here’s Westbrook in some drills during Friday afternoon’s workout:

The Jaguars also announced that seventh-round pick fullback Marquez Williams of Miami had signed his rookie contract to participate this weekend. Interesting that Fournette, who we wrote earlier has to know the parameters of his rookie deal including signing bonus, has not yet signed, but was out there Friday.
That’s a good sign, because one of Cleveland’s first rounders, safety Jabrill Peppers, is refusing to participate in the Browns rookie camp, because he doesn’t have a signed deal.
In any event, the Jaguars first rookie camp with newly promoted full-time head coach Doug Marrone will continue Saturday and we are left to speculate, for now, what the young guys truly look like on the field.
