Undrafted Jaguars defensive tackle Abry Jones didn’t play a lot last year, just 43-percent of the snaps. When Jones did play, though, he played rather well.
The numbers crunchers at Pro Football Focus certainly thought so and so too it seems does the members of the new hierarchy in Jacksonville, where it seems the Jags are ready to lock Jones up possibly for the long term.
An unrestricted free agent, Jones is close to wrapping up talks on a new contract with Jacksonville, according to Ryan O’Halloran, the Jags beat writer for the Florida Times Union.

Details of the contract are not yet known, but they must be favorable for Jones to bag the idea of testing the open market, where he figured to get some enticing nibbles from rival clubs.
The Jags made the move official on Wednesday morning:

Though he served primarily as a run-stop option behind Roy Miller last year, Jones earned the 21st highest grade among interior defenders by Pro Football Focus, ahead of notables such as Marcell Dareus, Dominique Easley and Grady Jarrett.
Now, those are PFF’s grades. It’s hard to know how Jones really graded out with the Jags but you’d have to guess he graded out fairly well for the Jags to make a move to get him under contract so soon.
A starter in nine of the 15 games last year, Jones got in on 32 tackles and broke up a pass while working in the Jags D-line rotation alongside Malik Jackson.
With Jackson, Miller and now Jones likely coming back, the Jags interior D-line should continue to develop into a strength. Now if only the Jags could get an edge rusher they could really cause some trouble.
