It was a humiliating night for the Jaguars, specifically their run defense, as Titans running back Derrick Henry ran around, through and past them for an amazing performance in a 30 – 9 Thursday Night Football win in Nashville.
Henry’s assault on the Tennessee and NFL record books began with an historic moment in the second quarter. After the Jaguars had been stopped on a fourth-and-goal run with Leonard fournette being tackled at the Tennessee one yard line, the Titans took over.
And that’s when Henry, the third-year back out of Alabama, also took over. He took a handoff from Marcus Mariota, bounced at the line of scrimmage to the left, stiff armed defensive back A.J. Bouye, rumbled downfield and stiff armed two more Jaguar Defenders racing into the end zone for a 99-yard touchdown run.
As analyst Troy Aikman mentioned at the end of the call of the play, it matched the Cowboys Tony Dorsett for the longest touchdown run from scrimmage in NFL history. Dorsett having done it against the Vikings in January of 1983.
Henry, who had already scored a first-quarter 3-yard touchdown run, would later add a 16 yard TD run in the fourth quarter and then another 54 yard touchdown run with 5:30 remaining. That made him the first running back in Titans history to have four rushing touchdowns in a single game.
The Titan still share a record book with the old Houston Oilers. And, Lorenzo White and Earl Campbell both had four rushing touchdown games for the Oilers, previously. Campbell’s came in the famous Monday night game with the Miami Dolphins in 1977.
Henry also becomes the first running back in the history of the NFL with a 90 yard or more touchdown run and then a subsequent 50 or more yard touchdown run in the same game.
Never been done before.
-Further, Henry’s 238 yards rushing that he finished with are a record for the Titans / Oilers franchise. Former Titan Chris Johnson ran for 228 yards, coincidentally, against the Jaguars also in 2009.
-Henry’s rushing total of 219 yards through the third quarter Thursday night, was the most of any NFL running back through three quarters, since Ricky Williams had 224 yards for the Dolphins against the Buffalo Bills in 2002.
-Henry was also the first player with four rushing touchdowns in the first three quarters of a game, since Priest Holmes of the Chiefs had four touchdowns in three quarters against the Atlanta Falcons in 2004.
And finally, Henry is the first player in the NFL to have at least 200 yards rushing and score four or more rushing touchdowns in a game, since the Bucs Doug Martin did it against the Raiders in 2012.
In the end, the stats are great, and Henry and his teammates blocking for him have memories of a lifetime for what he was able to do Thursday night against Jacksonville.
However, the numbers that the Titans are most concerned with are: 7-6.
That’s their record, and they are firmly in the AFC Wildcard picture after their easy win over the Jags.
