There it was on display Thursday night in Foxboro, MA. Jaguars top pick Leonard Fournette demonstrating the “battering ram” running style he constantly showed at LSU. And with good reason, Jags fans are excited about what they saw, but they should also be careful not to assume too much, too soon.

First, here’s the roll call of runs that demonstrate what we’re talking about:

It’s obvious that he ran with power and continued to get yards after contact. Sometimes four, five or six yards after being hit. Again, it’s what was expected and you want to see. It’s a toughness that Tom Coughlin all the way down to coach Doug Marrone want to see.

However, here’s where perspective comes in. The opening montage’ of those highlights is the second drive of the game for Jacksonville. Some of the Patriots defensive starters were in and some were not. The second half of those highlights came in the second quarter of preseason game #1 and at that point, there were virtually no starters on either side in the game.

So, while Fournette was doing exactly what is hoped (slamming into defenders and gaining yards) it was largely against guys, who won’t be playing much and certainly, not eleven guys in that category who will all be out there together, when the regular season starts.

God bless the preseason.

Final numbers for Fournette show: 9 attempts for 34 yards (3.4 avg), longest run 8 yards and the TD in goal line duty.

The debut was fine, the way he was running was great.

Just, take what Fournette showed Thursday one step at time and wait til you see this kind to stuff in the first half of the third preseason game (when starters will play the whole time) and obviously when he’s doing it week one and beyond in September.

Once, he’s going against the best competition, and opposing defenses are stacking the box to stop the run game and he’s pounding like that?

That’s the time to truly get excited.
