Jaguars FB Marquez Williams cleared to practice

When the Jaguars released their first depth chart of the preseason on Friday, former Jets regular Tommy Bohanon was on top at the fullback position.

One of the reasons was because, with rookie challenger Marquez Williams starting training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, he had yet to face any real competition for the job.

Well, Bohanon will have to start working a little harder for that top spot now, because the Jaguars announced on Sunday that Williams has been activated from the PUP list.

The move means the fullback competition will finally start to heat up a bit and while that may not seem like such a big deal, there’s potential for this to be one of the more important position battles in all of camp.

The Jaguars are taking on a new offensive identity this season, going from a finesse-oriented passing team to a downhill, power running team and that will likely result in them making more use of a traditional fullback.

Bohanon fits the mold, but so too does Williams, a 5-foot-9, 259-pound product of the University of Ohio who the Jaguars grabbed with a seventh-round pick in the 2017 Draft.

One pre-draft NFL scouting report described Williams as a “dump truck filled with a load of power’’ and if you can imagine anyone recording a 381-pound power clean in the weight room you can see why.

Williams is a throwback lead blocker type and that’s what the Jaguars want clearing the way for lead back Leonard Fournette in the throwback offensive scheme they intend to run this year.

The Jags objective is to take a lot of pressure off quarterback Blake Bortles and make life a little easier on Fournette and whoever the fullback is will have a big role in that.

Again, this may not seem like it on the surface, but when you consider what it is the Jaguars want to do offensively this year, this is easily one of the more important position battles in all of camp.

It’s an interesting battle as well. Bohanon has three years of NFL experience but he didn’t play at all last year, so the battle should be pretty even. And it’s just now getting started.
