Jaguars definitely looking to upgrade secondary

It’s a good year to be hunting cornerbacks and safeties both in free agency and draft. Good thing, too, because it seems the Jaguars will definitely be a part of that hunt.

Jags general manager David Caldwell didn’t come right out and say it, but he strongly indicated during a press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this week that the secondary help may be Jacksonville’s greatest area of need.

Now, some may be wondering how that can be, especially when you consider they were fairly solid there last year, especially after signing corner Prince Amukamara in free agency.

It appears, though, as if the Jags believe they can do better and they will definitely gamble on that belief because they’ve all but told Amukamara and safety Johnathan Cyprien they’re free to leave.

The same goes for backup cornerback Davon House, which means the Jaguars may be looking at overhauling half their secondary. As we said, though, this may be a good year to overhaul.

The draft class of corners and safeties is said to be one of the deepest in years and there are a couple of free agents at each position that the Jags are almost sure to target.

As it stands now, you can almost bet that the Jags will make a strong play for cornerbacks A.J. Bouye and will also take a shot at Logan Ryan and possibly for safety Tony Jefferson.

That said, the Jags have not shut the door on Amukamara and Cyprien. Caldwell said the team would like to have both back but he wants to see what the market for them is first.

“I think for both of those guys it’s important for them to hit the market, see what their value is, and then kind of circle back with their representation,” Caldwell said.

“Obviously we would love to have Cyp back. As for Prince, this is his second time in free agency and I think it’s important for him to see where he’s at and then we’ll go from there.’’

It’s a risky approach but as we said, it’s a good year to be looking for secondary help both in free agency and the draft and the Jags must feel they’ll be just fine if they take that route.
