Then Jags officially kicked off OTAs today and off-season left tackle pick up Branden Albert was not in attendance. While these workout are “voluntary,” you want every important member of your team in house. This was not unexpected, because Albert also didn’t attended the previous off-season workouts.
He apparently is unhappy after being acquired from the Dolphins that his contract has not been renegotiated. It’s not as if he isn’t making money, as is. Albert is owed $8.8 million this season and $9.5 million in 2018.
The 32 year old may be looking to strike big one more time, but he is also coming off the worst year of his career. His 42.2 PFF grade placed him 65th out of all tackles in 2016.
The Jags have been prepared for this though with the selection of Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson in the second round of the draft last month. Robinson will now receive reps at left tackle in Albert’s absence and with his injury issues over the past few seasons the Jags were already preparing for the worst.
With Cam in house and management not budging on contract talks, the Jags have all the leverage here it seems.
