Calais Campbell speaks on Jaguars defensive line potential

With the full understanding that the Jaguars haven’t put the pads on full time this off season, but veteran defender Calais Campbell already likes what he sees. That’s especially from his position group, the defensive line.

And, he isn’t afraid to share it and make comparisons to what he experienced in his time with the perennial playoff Cardinals.

Campbell told the Jacksonville media at OTAs this week that he’s excited for mini-camp and then training camp.

“We have a lot of guys who are flashing, making plays and being able to turn the corner,” Campbell said of his fellow line mates like Malik Jackson, Dante Fowler, Yannick Ngakoue (shown above) and even third round pick this year, Duwaune Smoot. “This team is stacked…especially at d-line,” he continued.

And we have to agree, they have upgraded. We wrote last month about a guy who probably isn’t getting enough attention, yet, who may be ready to break out in 2017, Dante Fowler. And Fowler is obviously going to improve with a veteran presence like Campbell in the meeting room and practice field. Plus, Campbell will attract the attention of opponents and game plan, too.

There is a lot of room for improvement, as the Jaguars only tied for 19th with 33 sacks a year ago, and their interception total of seven, a league worst, is also directly related to a lack of consistent pressure on the QB. It all must improve.

Again, it’s way premature to anoint the Jaguars, as anything, but the signs are pointing to that improvement, as this summer progresses.
