Ding, Dong the streak is dead. The Tennessee Vols overcame a 21-3 halftime deficit by scoring 35 unanswered points and ended their 11 game losing streak to the Florida Gators 38-28.

As our Chris Fischer well documented, the Gators had done a tremendous amount of smack talk that bordered on silly overconfidence leading up to the game, but for the first 30 minutes, they backed up. Austin Appleby, in his first start for the Gators, threw two first half TD’s and Florida was in complete control.

But, Joshua Dobbs played brilliantly in the second half completing seven of his first nine passes for two easy TD drives and then, after an Appleby pick, he threw this haymaker:

That bomb to Jauan Jennings put Tennessee up for good at 24-21 and was part of the second half avalanche.

In the end, Dobbs throws 319 yards and four scores, plus ran a 5th TD in for the 35 point second half. He will obviously be known forever by Vols fans (or at least 25 years) for ending the 11 year losing streak to Florida.

For his part, Head Coach Butch Jones righted the ship at halftime on both sides of the ball. This included on D, where they held the Gators to one tiny first down in their first four possessions after the break.

When last seen on the field, Jones was leading the Vols band, “The Mighty Sound of the South,” in the “Rocky Top Fight Song.”

Finger nails to the chalk board for Gators fans for sure. But, they got outplayed when it mattered and Tennessee is now in the driver’s seat in the SEC East.
