It didn’t take long for Gators coach Dan Mullen to replace his cornerbacks coach. That’s when Monday Mullen announced that former secondary coach Torrian Gray would be coming back to Florida from the Washington Redskins this season.

Gray will replace Charlton Warren, who left Florida over the weekend to join rival Georgia and coach Kirby Smart’s secondary.

As for Gray, he had been in the NFL the last two years under Jay Gruden in D.C. and will now come back with Mullen and reunite with gators defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, as well.

Mullen announced through the school about Gray:

“Obviously, Torrian brings a high level of familiarity with our program and the Southeastern Conference,” Coach Mullen said. “His track record of preparing players for the NFL and his success coaching at that level speaks for itself. Meanwhile, with his strong recruiting ties to the state of Florida and the fact that he played for Coach Grantham in college will make this transition seamless.”

However, Gator fans will be most excited that Gray was the secondary coach in Gainesville under Jim McElwain in 2016, when Florida had one of the best pass defenses in the country. That’s secondary included NFL players Teez Tabor and Quincy Wilson on it.

That has to excite players like junior defensive back to be, Marco Wilson, who took to social media Monday night:

Gray was a former player under Grantham when both were at Virginia Tech in the 1990s. He was a two-time all-big East defensive back and also a former second-round draft pick in the NFL of the Minnesota Vikings. He retired from the NFL after three seasons due to chronic knee problems.

Gray was a former high school store at Kathleen High School in Lakeland and was with Virginia Tech as a coach for 10 seasons (2006-15) before coming to Florida under McElwain.
