There’s no question  the New Orleans Saints need to re-build in certain areas if they hope to get back to contention in the NFC South. And, one interesting name that made his Saints on field debut this past weekend is former Gator linebacker Alex Anzalone.

As seen here, Anzalone was part of the New Orleans rookie mini-camp trying to make an impression on his new team and specifically, new linebackers coach, Mike Nolan:

Nolan, a well known defensive coordinator and former head coach of the 49ers, has been brought in to help the Saints try to get drastically better on defense. And, he’s made it no secret that playing time will be a wide open competition. Here’s more on that point.

As for Anzalone, he was a solid contributor on defense and also special teams the last two seasons with the Gators before breaking his forearm and thus, cutting short his 2016. The Saints are very interested in his abilities on kickoff and punt coverage, and that’s likely where he will see much his action early.

New Orleans clearly emphasized defense in the draft taking Ohio State DB Marshon Lattimore in the first round and then Utah S Marcus Williams in the second round. We also previously wrote about FAU’s Trey Hendrickson being drafted right after Anzalone also in the third round, as a pass rushing specialist and he may end up being a real value pick.

How much of an impact will the youth movement in the Big Easy have? Time will tell throughout the summer and preseason.
