It’s hard to believe but Spring practice is already here and the intrigue in Gainesville is the QB battle that will be looming. With Luke Del Rio sidelined for the entire Spring due to a shoulder injury we are going to be seeing some other faces taking snaps for the Gators. In the first practice, it was Feleipe Franks who took the first string snaps. Kyle Trask took the snaps with the second team. Also early enrollee Kadarius Toney is also going to be expected to take some snaps according to head coach Jim McElwain.
Gatorcountry.com breaks down what they saw in the first spring practice from Franks.
Franks first pass of the spring was behind and high to Jordan Scarlett for an incompletion. He benefitted from all 6-4 of C’yontai Lewis’ frame for a completion on a high pass on the second play before hitting Antonio Callaway in stride on a slant. Franks showed touch on a pass to Tyrie Cleveland in the back of the end zone to close out the fastball period.
The first thing you’ll notice about Franks and Trask, after their sheer size and stature, is their arm strength. Both quarterbacks can sling the ball all over the field. There hasn’t been a throw that either can’t make and they know that fact to be true. It gives both of them confidence, something the Gators have lacked at that position.
This is the second spring for both Franks and Trask as both came to school early before last season. Now the million dollar question for the Gators moving forward is if the QB position is Del Rio’s no matter what, or if they QBs taking reps this Spring will have a chance to upend Del Rio in the Fall. Considering the struggles from the position over the past several years, it may be safe to say that it’s going to be an open competition. Which may end up being only a good thing for the Gators.
