It’s been an interesting training camp so far in Miami, and Thursday night, the Dolphins will see live action in their first preseason game with the defending NFC champion Falcons at Hard Rock Stadium.
The Dolphins have plenty of veterans like Mike Pouncey, Laremy Tunsil and Jay Ajayi, who have some form of injury and are unlikely to play tonight.
As for the guys who will likely see at least some action, here’s what to watch:
Rookies Charles Harris, Raekwon McMillan and Davon Godchaux are a few to look out for with the first team defense. How much will they be out there, especially in the first quarter? How effective will they be against NFL competition at full speed? These Rookies will look to help lead the charge for this defense looking to breakthrough this season.
With Ajayi likely watching after a concussion suffered in practice, we will get a chance to see who might step up. Damien Williams, last season’s back up will get the first crack at his old job. Kenyan Drake, taken No. 73 overall in 2016, didn’t have much of an opportunity in the Dolphins backfield as a rookie. He will look to make some noise this preseason and become the backup. Both should see lots of touches in the first half of this one.
And finally, the quarterback position.
As we detailed earlier this week, you won’t see recently signed Jay Cutler on the field, and it’s a big night for Matt Moore. He proved himself late in the year after Ryan Tannehill’s injury and will look to get the offense going early on Thursday to make that decision a bit harder for Adam Gase for week one of the regular season. You also never know when Cutler could go down with an injury, too.
So, a good performance from Moore will be more than welcomed. Also, second year QB Brandon Doughty will likely get plenty of action not only tonight, but in this preseason attempting to solidify a spot on the roster.
