Searching for a win to salvage something at the end of the season, the Gators travel to Columbia, S.C. Saturday to play their former coach and the Gamecocks.
Here’s what we are watching:
Can Florida sustain offense?
We saw some spark at times last week in the loss to Missouri, but for interim coach Randy Shannon, they have to be better at the beginning on offense. In each of the last two blowouts, to UGA and the Tigers, Florida could not sustain drives, much less get touchdowns especially early in the game, and fell hopelessly behind by halftime.
Florida will stick with Malik Zaire at QB to start the game, who was okay last week at 13-19 for 158 yards. They also went back to Feleipe Franks late in the game who threw for the only TD. Expect that both guys will see some action.
South Carolina looking to finish strong
Gamecocks had their three game win streak snapped by #1 Georgia last week, but have been steadily improving behind QB Jake Bentley and an opportunistic. USC will play it’s final three games at home with Wofford sandwiched between the Gators and the humongous showdown with top 5 Clemson looming in two weeks. South Carolina is already bowl eligible at 6-3, and will look to add to it.
And finally, the “Muschamp Factor”
Despite what the volatile second year boss of the Gamecocks Will Muschamp might say, you know that he circles this game on the schedule after being ousted in Gainesville three years ago. Granted, Muschamp’s offenses were as pathetic as what we’ve seen from this year’s Gators, and when he had one of the worst seasons in Florida’s modern history at 4-8, he deserved to go.
Still, he’s now at another SEC East school and he can “stick another dagger” in Florida’s miserable season this afternoon.
