It has been a quick start to training camp for former UCF star DB Shaquill Griffin who was a third round selection for the Seattle Seahawks. Griffin who has been seeing quite a bit of action with the first team at cornerback because of normal starter Jeremy Lane’s injury, has been impressing the coaching staff. According to Pro Football Talk, the team is very happy with the rookie’s progress:
“I am pretty excited about him,” Carroll said on Monday. “He is doing really well. He has only taken positive steps. He is learning well. He is serious. He has a mentality that I think is going to allow him to deal with the issues and challenges of playing when Richard is on that side, and there is a guy over there, you are getting the ball a lot you know. That is going to come, he is going to get a lot of work. We are trying to work him in practice like that so he will have a sense for that.”
“He is really fast. He has really good hands. He has got natural movement. He is very strong. He has got good feel for playing the football. There is just nothing but positives and we have never had a guy that runs this fast that is this big, so right now it is all about technique and he has no problem with it. But he will get a lot better.”
Those are some very encouraging words from Carroll this early in the process. We mentioned right here on this site that Griffin could indeed be the steal of this draft. The fact that Lane got injured totally makes this scenario realistic. This is the perfect situation for Griffin. He’s getting first team action which means he’s going against the first team offense which is sharpening his skills. He’s playing opposite one of the best DBs in the league in Richard Sherman. Most importantly, he’s impressing the coaching staff while having this opportunity.
The Seahawks are a great team when it comes to finding great talent in the draft for defensive backs. They have another potential stud in Griffin, who’s is seemingly taking this opportunity and running with it.
