With the moon about to go all blocking the sun in it’s entirety today, it seems like a perfect time for the Associated Press to release their preseason top 25 football poll. We are taking a look at the poll to let you know where the Florida teams stand within this poll. Before we get there, it comes as little surprise that the #1 preseason team for the second year in a row is the Alabama Crimson Tide. After losing the national title game last year to Clemson, Bama comes back looking for revenge.
Now let’s take a look at the Florida schools. Again it comes as no surprise that Florida State comes in as the highest ranked school in the state. They start the season as #3. However right of the bat we will see them get tested as they face Alabama on September 2nd, which will be played in the brand new Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta. That will make the first poll after the first week, look much different than it does today.
The Florida Gators come in ranked 17th in the preseason poll. The Gators are also going through a fierce QB competition right now, which is seemingly very intriguing. Many experts expect the SEC East battle to be between the Gators and their favorite rival Georgia, which will make the “Don’t Call it the Cocktail Party” game extra fun this season.
The Miami Hurricanes come in at #18, despite not knowing who their starting QB is yet. With that said, it seems Mark Richt may make his decision by Tuesday afternoon. Miami did have a better scrimmage on Saturday after Richt blasted the offense at the end of the week. Miami opens the season on the September 2nd against Bethune-Cookman.
The South Florida Bulls are ranked 19th in the preseason poll. The question mark is that will Charlie Strong be able to build off the best season in program’s history a year ago. The folks at the AP seem to think so. QB Quentin Flowers is a dark horse Heisman candidate, who is expected to lead the charge of a USF program picked to win the AAC. This is actually the only second time USF has been ranked in a preseason poll. The last time was 2008, where they were also ranked 19th.
