Florida Gators Go With Randy Shannon As DC For Outback Bowl

(Icon sportwire)

As expected the Florida Gators announced that Randy Shannon will be promoted to defensive coordinator from LBs coach for the Outback Bowl according to head coach Jim McElwain.  The position became vacant when Geoff Collins accepted the head coaching job at Temple.

The move is not particularly a surprising one other than the move isn’t permanent. The final decision according to McElwain will happen after the bowl game.

In his press conference today he addressed the Shannon role amongst other things as the team get prepared to take on Iowa.

This was the second season Shannon has been with the Gators. Before that he was a LBs coach with Arkansas and TCU. And before that he was also the head coach at the University of Miami. Hiring Shannon for the full time position seems like a nice fit considering his experience in the state, especially at the recruiting level. Makes you wonder why the delay.

The coach speak obviously says they want to prepare for the bowl game. However perhaps McElwain is waiting for the pool to deepen when the NFL coaching carousel begins in a few weeks. Either way, the Gators will have options as that position is going to be one of the most sought out assistant gigs in the country.
