In a full four quarter battle at Hard Rock Stadium it turns out that the Dolphins biggest play/decision in their 27-23 win was accepting a penalty on the Jets kickoff late in the game.

After scoring the go-ahead TD on Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 18 yard TD pass to Jalin Marshall with 5:42 left to lead 23-20, the Jets obviously kicked off. And, that’s when the biggest moment of Sunday occurred. The first kickoff where NY stopped the returner inside the 20 yard line was nullified when the Jets were off side, the Dolphins took the penalty and the re-kick here:

Rookie Kenyon Drake’s electrifying 96 yard kickoff return was a backbreaker for the Jets and  gave Miami a four point cushion at 27-23.

Fitzpatrick, who left the game earlier after a hit to his knee but returned a couple of series later, had one last chance to drive it for a winning TD for NY. Alas, they went three and out, elected to punt with two timeouts and the two minute warning remaining. The Dolphins picked up their necessary first downs and ran the clock out.

Fins RB Jay Ajayi was bidding to become the first NFL runner ever to have three straight 200 yard games, did not come close that remarkable milestone but did finish with 111 yards and a TD.

Fitzpatrick finished 17-28 for 193 yards 1 TD and 2 INT’s. The second pick was a killer in the fourth quarter where his throw into the end zone didn’t have a Jet in the area and killed a chance at even a field goal.

Miami is now 4-4, trailing the Pats by three in the AFC East, but has life in the AFC Wildcard race.
