Trying to figure out any semblance of what the Dolphins are going to do on Thursday night with their first round draft pick is about as a futile exercise as one can find. All teams tend to play a cat and mouse game and it gets worse the closer we get to the draft.
For the 30 a lotted visits each team has, the Dolphins invited several safeties, despite having roster spots already filled at safety. That as stated previously on this site, just may be a smokescreen. The two positions however that are probably the most critical is DE and OL.
Let’s being with offensive linemen. The first round this season isn’t stacked with them. The Dolphins will need to get some depth at guard, but the questions remain whether it’s worth drafting a guard at #22 overall. Some of the top offensive linemen in this draft are Forrest Lamp from Western Kentucky, Cam Robinson from Alabama, and Garrett Boles from Utah. Deciding which is the best offensive linemen in this small group will depend on how they fit into a new scheme. From where it stands right now, it doesn’t look like the Dolphins will go in this direction, but you never know.
One of the reasons why the Dolphins won’t pull the trigger on an offensive lineman this year in the first round also has to do with the plethora of talent at the pass rusher position. A few names that have been brought up are Charles Harris from Missouri, Takk McKinley from UCLA, Haason Reddick from Temple, Taco Charlton from Michigan. Some of these guys are listed at linebacker, but they are going to be pass rushing linebackers.
Any of the above players mentioned should fit in nicely with the current scheme the Dolphins run. Out of this group Reddick would probably be the biggest steal if he fell to 22. But from what it looks like, despite the needs at offensive line, especially at the guard position, the first round talent for pass rusher is going to be too good to pass up. Especially because Cameron Wake is getting long in the tooth.
