The NFL has compensated the Miami Dolphins with three draft pick in the upcoming draft. The compensation is a result of Miami losing three players to free agency last offseason.

The Dolphins will receive a third round pick as well as two fifth round picks. This is in connection with Olivier Vernon signing with the Giants, Lamar Miller signing with the Texans and Rishard Matthews signing with the Titans.

All three of the players had solid years for their teams in 2016, which played in a role in how the NFL decided to award the compensation.

Here’s what the Sun-Sentinel is reporting:

Miami got the third-round compensatory pick (No. 97 overall) for losing Vernon, who signed an $85 million deal with the Giants last offseason. The Dolphins wisely took the transition tag off Vernon before free agency began to land the compensatory pick, because they knew they weren’t willing to match the offers made from the three teams bidding on him.

The Dolphins were given the 180th and 186th overall picks for the losses of Miller, who rushed for 1,073 yards and scored six touchdowns in Houston, and Matthews, who caught 65 passes for 945 yards and nine touchdowns with Tennessee.

The Dolphins now have seven picks in the upcoming draft after trading two picks last season and trading another pick recently to acquire TE Julius Thomas from the Jaguars.
