If Dolphins aren’t after QB now in round one of draft, where do they turn?

With Friday’s “eyebrow raising” signing of free agent quarterback Brock Osweiler, the Dolphins have further muddied and called into question what they might be looking to do with the number 11 pick in the upcoming draft.

We have written extensively about the Dolphins looking closely at the top quarterbacks that will be available in the top 11, including Heisman Trophy winner Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield.

We also know they met with and worked out Mayfield earlier this week.

But, with the Osweiler signing, there is now not the same urgency to grab a quarterback at number 11 if they don’t want to.

So where might the Dolphins turn to for other positions and what may still be there when they select?

Our brothers at NDT Scouting, the official scouting service of Fanrag Sports, just happened to go over that very question just a couple of days ago.

Interesting that in their opinion Roquan Smith of Georgia would be an excellent fit, as a linebacker. It would seem to us that the Dolphins might be more inclined to look at running back, or offensive line, etc.

The name Vita Vea, DT of Washington, is an intriguing one because he’s obviously a replacement for Ndamukong Suh, who they let walk in free agency. Also, FSU safety Derwin James would be a fan favorite and is a play maker at that position.

Might this be a situation where the Dolphins elect to trade down and gather more draft picks? This is especially when there are numerous teams who may be trying to get into the top at 11 to grab one of the QBs

It still has to all play out but clearly, having Ryan Tannehill coming back off of ACL surgery and now also having Osweiler, you can’t say that it’s a “given” that the Dolphins will stay where they are or even trade up to get a QB.

Then again, maybe they’ve had their eyes on Mayfield all along, and they want a three-way competition and will end up releasing someone on the eve of the season, too.

But if it’s not a QB, then what?

The fun continues.
