If there is one NFL prospect that is just making 100% of NFL scouts drool at the combine, it is former UCONN safety Obi Melifonwu. His measurables at the combine are just sickening. Already a player who’s stock jumped after the Senior Bowl, it’s clear he isn’t done showing off his freakish abilities.
Melifonwu is 6’4 224 Lbs, with arm length 32 1/2”. Again, he’s a safety, that’s a big dude. So how’d he do in the some of the drills? He ran a 4.40 40, which was tops for all safeties at the combine. His vertical jump was 44 inches, which beat Eric Berry’s combine record. How about his broad jump? 11’9” is what he did, which is another combine record. That’s two combine records.
It’s amazing, right now, Melifonwu isn’t even listed as a top 32 prospect on ESPN’s list. After everything wraps at the combine, expect that to change.
Melifonwu was a four year starter at UCONN, who every year seem to improve. This includes his senior campaign where he led the team in tackles with 118 ad four INTs. Pretty insane numbers for a safety.
Now the questions will start to hover around this young man. Will Scouts overthink some of his weaknesses, which includes some in coverage and on the goal line and pass on this young man? It’s possible.
We do know the Jaguars have the fourth pick, and he isn’t expected to be taken that early, despite the Jags need in the secondary. Could he drop to the Miami Dolphins at 22? The Fins aren’t exactly in the market to draft a safety, they are looking at some help at the LB position first. With that said, could we see the Dolphins take Melinfonwu? He may be the best athlete available at the time. Also with the Patriots looking to have Rob Gronkowski back healthy and could be in the market to draft another TE (Njoku?) if Martellus Bennett decides to test free agency, having a stud safety would be a big time foil. Especially if he has the potential to be a transcendent talent. You don’t want to be the guy who passed on guy like that.
Obviously the combine is only a slice of what it takes to make it in the NFL. With that said Obi Melifonwu has the scouts drooling at this point. Which is a great thing for the young man, but could be even better for the team that drafts him.
