At this point in the NFL Draft preparation process, it’s really hard to tell the direction any team will really go in. Sometimes you can tell by the allotted visits, the type of positions teams are going by. That said, some teams use the visits to create a smokescreen to try to confuse other teams, or pressure other teams to take certain players so they can get who they want initially. There is a ton of cat and mouse games going on, which is certainly part of the intrigue. That takes us to the Miami Dolphins and their player invite behavior. Are they playing the smokescreen game, or are they for real in who they are targeting?
On Thursday, the Dolphins invited former BYU safety Kai Nacua. Nacua is the sixth safety the Dolphins have invited in their allotted 30 visits. A group that included stud former UCONN safety Obi Melifonwu. The focus on safety is interesting because already signed Nate Allen and T.J. McDonald this offseason.
Back to Nacua, he was not invited to the combine but ran a 4.48 at BYU Pro Day, which ranked him sixth overall at the position. He had six picks each of the past two seasons and has 14 career interceptions. Cleary a productive player who has been said to have great instincts.
Nacua seems like he’s going to get drafted, whether it’s the Dolphins is another question. The question today is whether or not the Dolphins are focusing so intently on these safety visits that their real strategy is to create a smokescreen. Will they draft multiple safeties, or are they going to go heavy on edge rusher, and this whole ordeal is just meant to distract the other teams. Is this one of those drafts where the DB position is so deep that now is the time to stockpile DBs as insurance for thinner future drafts. Who knows, we will only find out after the draft to see who the Dolphins actual select before we know whether or not they are just blowing smoke with these visits.
