We knew when the Dolphins started clearing salary cap room earlier in the week that they had priorities with their own. And, Saturday afternoon, Cameron Wake was the first one officially taken care of by the team.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter had the scoop first:
Dolphins gave Cameron Wake a 2-year, $19 million extension that includes $11 million guaranteed, per source.

The key for the veteran Pro Bowl DE is he was only slated to make just under $7 million for this season and gets much more with the $11 million in guarantees. There’s also no doubt, that the Fins were able to lower his cap number for 2017 while rewarding him for a quality season.
As we wrote earlier in the week, the Dolphins cleared serious cap room releasing three players including Mario Williams and will also either trade or release Branden Albert soon, too. These moves save the team almost $22 milion for 2017.
Wake came off an injured Achilles to have 11.5 sacks becoming just the third player in the last 10 seasons to have 10+ sacks over the age of 34. Here was his conversation with Dolphins.com after inking the deal:
Cam is confident in this team and the direction that it is headed.

The Dolphins may have a couple of more deals that they chose to rework with their own players soon, before free agency gets underway on March 9th.
