As the Gators get set to take on SEC arch rival Georgia in their traditional Jacksonville showdown, the Del Rio Family has a chance at a quirky trivia “Double” this weekend.
After dad Jack Del Rio’s Oakland Raiders defeated the home team Jags last Sunday 33-16, it’s now son Luke’s turn for a chance to lead Florida to victory at Everbank Field. Del Rio returned from a slight knee injury that had him out of the Tennessee loss to help the Gators dispatch Mizzou two weeks ago. And now after the bye, they get ready for the ‘Dawgs Saturday at 3:30.
Florida has dominated the series over the last generation by winning 20 of the last 26 games. And they are favored to put it on the boys from Athens, yet again to maintain the lead in the SEC East race.
Back to “Pops’ Del Rio. In a bit of scheduling serendipity, the NFL put the Raiders in the Sunshine State two weeks in row, as Oakland will play in Tampa Bay this Sunday. So, wisely, the Raiders elected to stay in Florida to practice this week and it also means that Jack Del Rio will get the chance to scoot to Jacksonville and see his son play in person Saturday before duty calls back in Tampa three hours to the Southwest on Sunday.
There probably isn’t a stat or record being kept on whether a father and son have ever won an NFL and then a major college game in back to back weeks in stadium that isn’t either of their home fields. But, that’s what can happen with another Gator win over Georgia Saturday.
And then, the NFL head coach dad getting to see it in person because of a scheduling quirk?
We think that would make a “Del Rio Double” even more cool.
